The Best Pilates Gear for Women
Pilates has one requirement most workouts do not: the instructor needs to see your spine move. Everything about what to wear follows from that, plus the fact that a reformer has moving parts.

Quick picks
The short answer

1 · Best pilates leggings
CRZ YOGA Butterluxe High-Waisted LeggingsHigh-waisted, thick enough to stay opaque under stretch, and a waistband that does not roll down when you curl up off the mat. Brushed fabric, so it runs warm in a heated room.
Maker lists fabric: Brushed Butterluxe

2 · Best bra for mat work
CRZ YOGA Longline Sports BraA longline cut stays put when you are upside down or rolling through the spine, and it covers the gap a short bra leaves when a top rides up. Low enough impact for pilates without squeezing.
Maker lists cut: Longline

3 · Best top for a reformer class
ODODOS Cropped Tank with Built-In BraFitted and cropped with a built-in bra, so there is nothing loose to fall over your face in a shoulder bridge and nothing hanging to catch in a strap. One garment instead of two.
Maker lists cut: Cropped

4 · Best grip socks
ToeSox Low Rise Grip SocksGrip dots on the sole and individual toes, which is what most studios mean when they say grip socks are required. Published as 77 percent cotton, so wash them cool and skip the softener.
Maker lists style: Split toe, low rise

5 · Best props to own first
ProBody Pilates Ring, Ball and Band KitA ring, a mini ball and bands in one box, which covers most of the small equipment a home mat practice asks for. The ring is the piece you will use most.
Maker lists included: 14 in ring, 9 in ball, resistance bands, pump and bag

The short answer
Start with one pair of high-waisted, genuinely opaque leggings and a pair of grip socks. Those two cover every studio requirement and every mat class at home. The CRZ YOGA Butterluxe leggings are the default for the first, because the waistband stays up through the rolling and curling that pilates is built on, and the ToeSox Low Rise socks are the default for the second, because toe-separated grip socks are what most studios have in mind when they put grip socks on the booking page.
After that: a longline bra rather than a short one, a fitted top rather than a loose one, and the ProBody ring and ball kit if you are practicing at home and want the props. Nothing here is gendered by the equipment — every item is chosen on fit and coverage, which is the thing the search for "pilates gear for women" is actually asking about.
What pilates asks of clothing
Four things, and they are not the same four that yoga asks for.
Fitted, so the spine is visible. Pilates cueing is about where your pelvis and ribs are, and an instructor cannot see either through a loose t-shirt. This is the reason studios look the way they do, and it is not a style convention. A fitted top is the single clothing change that makes a class more useful.
A waistband that survives spinal flexion. Half of mat pilates happens curled up off the floor, which is the exact movement that folds a mid-rise waistband over. High-waisted is not a fashion preference here; it is the difference between concentrating on your breath and pulling your leggings up between exercises.
Opaque under stretch. A huge amount of pilates is done on your back with your legs in the air, which is the single least forgiving position for a thin knit. The daylight test — put them on, squat, and look in a mirror in natural light — settles it in ten seconds, and the full version of the test is here.
Nothing loose to fall or catch. This is the reformer-specific one. A long drawstring, a baggy hem, a hooded top, a zip pull: these are things that find springs, straps and a moving carriage. More on that below.
The five, side by side
| Item | What it is for | The spec that matters | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRZ YOGA Butterluxe leggings | The base layer | High waist, opaque under stretch | Brushed fabric runs warm |
| CRZ YOGA Longline Sports Bra | Support and coverage | Longline cut stays down | Low impact is enough here |
| ODODOS Cropped Tank | Fitted top, bra built in | Nothing loose to catch | One garment instead of two |
| ToeSox Low Rise | Grip on a reformer or studio floor | Toe separation and sole grip | Mostly cotton; wash cool |
| ProBody Ring, Ball and Band Kit | Home props | Three pieces in one box | The ring gets used most |
Fiber content, cuts and inclusions above are as the makers publish them. The practical reading: the first two rows are the purchase, the third is an upgrade, the fourth is mandatory if there is a reformer in the room, and the fifth only matters if you practice at home.
The reformer changes the rules
A reformer is a machine with springs, a sliding carriage, foot straps and long cords. Three clothing decisions change the moment one is in the room.
Grip socks stop being optional. Most studios require them, and the reason is the equipment rather than hygiene theater: your feet press on a padded footbar and a polished carriage, and bare feet slide on both. Toe-separated socks are the common studio-accepted style, and whether you need them for mat work too is answered in do you need grip socks for pilates.
Legs usually want covering. Your calves and the backs of your thighs are in contact with the carriage and shoulder rests for a lot of a class. Leggings make that comfortable; shorts make it stickier and colder.
Hems and strings have to be short. Flared leggings, long drawstrings and loose vests all find moving parts. Tuck or lose them. The full list of what a reformer catches is in what to wear for pilates.
Props, in buying order
If the practice is at home, the order is settled and short. A firm mat first, because a soft yoga mat makes rolling through the spine feel vague and unstable — a denser surface is the fix, and the mats for pilates are ranked here. Grip socks second, if you have a reformer or go to a studio.
Third, a ring. It is small, it stores on a hook, it costs very little, and it makes exercises you already know meaningfully harder by giving your arms and inner thighs something to press against. Fourth, a mini ball, for support under the lower back and for the small-range work the ball is built for.
Something with real resistance comes much later, and it is a bigger decision than it looks — the reformer alternatives set out what each option actually gives you, and the beginner pilates kit puts the whole list in order with reasoning.

What to skip
- Anything loose on top. A flowing tank falls over your face in half the mat repertoire and hides the thing the instructor is watching.
- Pocketed leggings for reformer work. Pockets are excellent for walking to class and a nuisance lying on your side on a carriage.
- High-impact bras. Pilates is low impact. A compressive running bra restricts the rib movement the breathing cues are about.
- Thin, pale, smooth knits. The combination that fails the daylight test. Thin is fine in a dark color; thin and pale is not.
- Regular socks with grip dots as an afterthought. If the studio asks for grip socks, buy grip socks. Dots on the sole of a thick sport sock slide on a carriage.
- A second set of props before you have used the first. Most people who buy a ring, a ball and a bar use the ring.
One thing worth buying that nobody puts on a list: a second pair of grip socks. The single most common reason people turn up to a reformer class without them is laundry, and studios charge for a spare pair at the desk. Keeping them usable is a surprisingly specific job — washing grip socks covers it.
How we picked
Chosen on published criteria, and we say so
Most gear sites open by telling you how many hours they spent with the products. We have not used most of these, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Every pick here is chosen against criteria we publish — grip, cushioning, size options, what buyers report after a year of use, and whether the thing is still actually sold — and every manufacturer figure on the page is labeled as the maker's claim.
Nobody pays for a place on this page, no product was supplied free in exchange for coverage, and a specification the maker does not publish is never guessed at. See the full criteria and weighting.

We have not used every product on this page, and we do not pretend otherwise. Thicknesses, materials, sizes and warranty terms are the manufacturer's published figures, shown as their claims. Anything about materials, skin or injury is linked to a source.
