What to Wear: Clothes That Behave When You Fold Over

Most activewear is sold on how it looks standing up. What matters is what it does upside down, in a warm room, an hour in.

Wear what you already own, once

Before buying anything, do one class in whatever you already have. Leggings or shorts you can squat in, a top that does not fall over your face when you tip upside down. That single session will tell you more about what you need than any product page, because the failures are specific and immediate: the waistband rolls, the top rides up, the fabric is see-through when you bend.

Then buy for the failure. What to wear to your first class is the page for that first session, and yoga pants for beginners is where to go once you know what went wrong.

How activewear divides

Brushed versus smooth

Brushed fabrics — the buttery, slightly fuzzy ones everybody loves — are warm, soft and lint magnets. Smooth technical knits are cooler, dry faster and show sweat more. It is genuinely a room-temperature decision: brushed for a cool living room, smooth for anything heated. See cotton versus synthetic for the wider fabric question.

Leggings versus shorts

Leggings keep a mat from sticking to bare skin and stay put in seated twists. Shorts are cooler and let you see your own knee alignment, which some people find genuinely useful. In a heated room shorts win on comfort and lose on grip against the mat. Shorts picks are here.

The waistband

More important than the fabric. A high, wide waistband stays put through folds and inversions. A thin elastic one rolls down the moment you bend forward, and you will spend the class pulling at it. This is the single most useful thing to look at in a product photo.

Tops and bras

Anything loose will end up around your ears in downward dog. Either tuck it in or wear something fitted or cropped. For bras, the yoga-specific problem is not impact — it is riding up when you invert, which is why longline cuts exist. Tops and bras covers both.

What the money buys

Opacity, seam construction and how the fabric behaves after fifty washes. Cheap leggings are usually fine new and thin out at the seat within a few months; the mid-range ones hold their opacity far longer. That is most of the real difference, and it is why the squat test matters more than the brand on the waistband.

The premium tier buys fit range, fabric hand and the confidence that the same size will fit next year. It does not buy performance a mid-price legging lacks. This is the one category on the site where the cheap option and the expensive option are genuinely close in what they do.

The mistake people make

Buying for a heated room what works in a cool one. Brushed fabric in a hot class is miserable: it holds moisture, clings and stays wet for the whole session. If you are heading somewhere heated, read what to wear to hot yoga first, and check the hot-room legging picks rather than the softest thing you can find.

The other mistake is assuming an expensive legging is automatically opaque. Some very pricey fabrics are thin, and some inexpensive ones are not. Bend over in front of a mirror in daylight. It takes ten seconds and nothing else tells you.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What should I wear to my first yoga class?

Leggings or shorts you can squat in, and a fitted or tucked top so it does not fall over your face. Bare feet. Nothing new — wear something you already know behaves. Full list on the first class page.

How do I tell if leggings are squat-proof?

Bend fully forward in front of a mirror in daylight and look at the seat. Stretch the fabric across your palm and see whether skin tone shows through. Both take seconds, and no product description substitutes for them — more here.

Are yoga pants and leggings the same thing?

Not originally — yoga pants were looser and often flared, and leggings are the fitted knit most people now mean. The terms have largely merged in shopping. See the comparison.

Can I wear cotton to yoga?

For a cool, slow class, yes — cotton is comfortable and stays fresher than synthetics. In a heated class it soaks and stays heavy. Cotton versus synthetic covers the trade-off.
