The Best Tops and Bras for Yoga and Pilates

The problem yoga creates is not bounce. It is a top around your ears in downward dog, and the fix is cut rather than support.

The short answer

A longline bra, or a cropped top with a built-in shelf. Both solve the problem yoga actually creates, which is fabric migrating when you fold and invert, rather than the impact problem running creates.

The real problem: riding up

Most activewear marketing is about support levels, because most activewear is sold to runners. Yoga has a different failure mode. In downward dog, forward folds and anything inverted, gravity pulls loose fabric toward your head, and a normal t-shirt ends up over your face.

There are three fixes and they all work.

  • A longline bra. The band extends down the ribcage, so there is nothing short enough to flip up. This is the purpose-built answer.
  • A cropped top. No length to migrate. Fitted at the hem so it stays.
  • A longer fitted top you tuck in. The free version, and it works if the top is fitted rather than loose.

What does not work is a loose t-shirt, however comfortable. If you have been holding the hem in downward dog, this is why.

How much support

PracticeSupport neededWhy
Slow or restorative yogaLightAlmost no vertical movement
Vinyasa or flowLight to mediumSome jumping between poses
Mat pilatesLightControlled, floor-based
Yoga plus running or HIITHigh, cup-sizedBuy for the hardest activity, not the easiest

Yoga needs less support than almost any other activity, which is why the light, comfortable options dominate this category. The exception is buying one bra for several activities: in that case buy for the highest impact one and accept that it is more structure than a mat class needs.

What to look for

  • Removable pads, and take them out before washing. Pads that shift in the machine never quite go back right.
  • No hooks or thick clasps down the back if you lie on your back a lot, which in pilates you do.
  • A soft, wide underband. Narrow elastic digs in during long holds.
  • Racerback or cross-back straps stay on the shoulder better than straight straps in twists.
  • Fabric matched to the room, the same rule as everything else — cotton versus synthetic.

How we picked

Chosen on published criteria, and we say so

Most gear sites open by telling you how many hours they spent with the products. We have not used most of these, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Every pick here is chosen against criteria we publish — grip, cushioning, size options, what buyers report after a year of use, and whether the thing is still actually sold — and every manufacturer figure on the page is labeled as the maker's claim.

Nobody pays for a place on this page, no product was supplied free in exchange for coverage, and a specification the maker does not publish is never guessed at. See the full criteria and weighting.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What kind of top is best for yoga?

Fitted and either cropped or long enough to tuck. Loose t-shirts fall over your face in downward dog.

Do I need a sports bra for yoga?

Something supportive enough to be comfortable, but yoga is low impact. A light or medium support bra is plenty unless you also do higher-impact activities.

What is a longline sports bra?

One with a band extending further down the ribcage, so it does not ride up when you fold or invert.
