The short answer

Smooth, thin, quick-drying — and seriously consider shorts instead. The brushed fabrics that feel best in a cool living room are the worst possible choice in a heated room: they hold moisture, cling, and stay wet for the entire class.

Why fabric matters more here

In a cool room, fabric is a comfort question. In a heated one it becomes a functional one, because you are producing sweat faster than any garment can move it, and the difference between a fabric that wicks and one that absorbs is the difference between damp and soaked.

Three things follow. Smooth technical knits move moisture to the surface and dry as you go. Brushed knits hold it in the pile against your skin. And anything with cotton in it — see cotton versus synthetic — becomes heavy and stays heavy.

There is a grip element too. Wet fabric against a mat slides, which is part of why bare legs work better in heat: skin on a grippy mat holds where soaked lycra does not. That is also why the mat you use matters as much as the clothes — mats for hot yoga.

The opacity trade

Thin fabric dries fast and goes sheer. That is the trade and there is no way around it entirely, but there are two things that help.

First, wet fabric is more transparent than dry fabric. A legging that passes the squat test in your bedroom may not pass it forty minutes into a heated class, which is a genuinely unpleasant thing to discover mid-way through. If you are unsure, err toward the thicker option.

Second, darker colors and heathered finishes hide more than flat pale ones. This is not a fashion point; it is the single most reliable way to buy a thin legging you will not worry about.

What to check

  • Do the squat test twice — once dry, and once with the fabric damp. Wet is the condition that matters.
  • Choose a dark or heathered color if the fabric is thin.
  • Avoid brushed or fleece-backed anything, however nice it feels in the shop.
  • Check the waistband is not a separate elastic strip — it will roll when wet.
  • Skip pockets. A phone in a side pocket in a heated room is a sweaty phone.

Wash them cold and skip the dryer; heat is what kills the elasticity in technical knits, and a hot class already gives them a hard life. And take a towel — for the mat, not just for you — see the hot-yoga mat page.

How we picked

Chosen on published criteria, and we say so

Most gear sites open by telling you how many hours they spent with the products. We have not used most of these, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Every pick here is chosen against criteria we publish — grip, cushioning, size options, what buyers report after a year of use, and whether the thing is still actually sold — and every manufacturer figure on the page is labeled as the maker's claim.

Nobody pays for a place on this page, no product was supplied free in exchange for coverage, and a specification the maker does not publish is never guessed at. See the full criteria and weighting.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What should I wear to hot yoga?

Smooth, thin, quick-drying fabric, or shorts. Nothing brushed, nothing cotton. Full guide here.

Are leggings or shorts better for hot yoga?

Shorts are cooler and grip the mat better. Leggings stop a mat sticking to bare thighs in seated poses. Most regulars end up in shorts.

Do leggings go see-through when wet?

Thin ones do. Test them damp rather than dry, and choose darker or heathered colors if the fabric is light.
