The Best Yoga Mats for Hot Yoga

In a heated room a mat has one job, and most mats fail it. Grip has to survive moisture, not just exist when the surface is dry.

The short answer

You need a surface whose grip improves with moisture, not one that merely resists it. That means a mat with a grip-top layer like the Liforme, a bonded microfiber mat like the Yoga Design Lab Infinity, a cork mat, or any decent mat with a skidless towel over it.

If you already own a mat you like, start with the towel. It costs a fraction of a new mat and it fixes the same problem.

Why most mats fail in a hot room

Standard mats grip by dry friction between rubber or PVC and skin. Introduce a film of sweat and that friction collapses — the water acts as a lubricant, and your hands hydroplane. This is why a mat that felt perfectly grippy in a cool living room becomes unusable in a heated class, and it is not a defect.

The surfaces that work in heat do something different. Cork becomes tackier as it absorbs a small amount of moisture. Microfiber and the polyurethane-style grip layers work by wicking the water away from the contact point so skin meets surface, not skin meets water. Open-cell rubber, like the JadeYoga Harmony, absorbs sweat into the material, which works well and is the reason those mats need airing.

The honest recommendation: if hot classes are occasional, buy the towel. If they are your main practice, buy the mat — a towel that needs straightening three times a session gets old quickly.

Looking after it

Hot yoga puts far more sweat into a mat than anything else you will do, and the mats that work best in heat are frequently the ones that absorb it. That combination means care matters more here than in any other category.

Never roll a wet mat up and put it in a bag. Hang it or lay it flat until it is properly dry, every time. Do not soak an open-cell rubber mat — water gets into the material and does not come out. How to clean a yoga mat has the method for each material, and the closed-cell versus open-cell distinction is the part people get wrong.

What you wear matters too, and it is the other half of the same problem — see what to wear to hot yoga.

How we picked

Chosen on published criteria, and we say so

Most gear sites open by telling you how many hours they spent with the products. We have not used most of these, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Every pick here is chosen against criteria we publish — grip, cushioning, size options, what buyers report after a year of use, and whether the thing is still actually sold — and every manufacturer figure on the page is labeled as the maker's claim.

Nobody pays for a place on this page, no product was supplied free in exchange for coverage, and a specification the maker does not publish is never guessed at. See the full criteria and weighting.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need a special mat for hot yoga?

You need a surface that grips when wet. That can be a dedicated hot-yoga mat, a cork mat, or an ordinary mat with a skidless towel over it.

Do I need a yoga towel for hot yoga?

If your mat relies on dry friction, yes. A skidless towel with silicone nubs is the standard fix and the cheapest one.

How do I clean a mat after hot yoga?

Wipe it down after every session and let it dry fully before rolling. Do not soak an open-cell rubber mat — the full method is here.

Is cork good for hot yoga?

Yes. Cork is one of the few surfaces that grips better as it gets damp, which is exactly what a heated room needs.
