How Much Does a Pilates Reformer Weigh?
Weight is the specification that decides whether a reformer gets moved, stored or simply lives where the delivery driver left it. Published figures, and what each band means in a real house.

The short answer
A home reformer weighs roughly 56 to 140 pounds, and where it sits in that range is set by whether it uses cords or springs. Stamina's AeroPilates Reformer 287 is published at 56 pounds, which is light enough for one person to tilt and walk. At the other end, the Balanced Body Allegro 2 is published at 133 pounds without its legs and 139 pounds with them — a two-person machine that is designed to stay put.
The practical reading: anything under about 70 pounds is a machine you can reposition alone, anything over about 120 pounds is furniture. Spring reformers with a folding frame land in the middle, which is usually where the right answer is for a home.
Published weights
| Machine | Type | Published weight | Published dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| AeroPilates Reformer 287 | Cords, folds | 56 lb | 85.25 in x 17.5 in x 9 in |
| Balanced Body Allegro 2 | Springs, does not fold | 133 lb without legs; 139 lb with legs | 94 in x 25.5 in x 15 in with legs |
| Folding spring reformers generally | Springs, folds flat | Data unavailable — makers publish this inconsistently | Varies |
| Reformer boards | Bands, folds or slides away | Light enough for one person | Varies |
The third row is deliberately blank rather than filled in. Several folding spring reformers do not publish a product weight on their own product pages, and we will not put an estimate in a table — if you are choosing between two specific folding machines, ask the retailer for the figure in writing before you buy. The 287 weight comes from a specification sheet attributed to the manufacturer; the Allegro 2 figures are from a retailer listing. Both are linked below.
Note also that the maximum user weight is a separate published number and a more important one for some buyers: the AeroPilates 287 is published with a 300 pound maximum user weight. Check that spec as carefully as the machine's own weight.
Why they weigh what they do
Three things account for almost all of it.
The frame material. A studio-grade reformer is a hardwood or heavy-gauge steel frame built to be used by strangers for a decade. A home machine is aluminum or lighter steel with more plastic in the fittings. That is most of the difference between 56 pounds and 133.
Springs versus cords. A spring reformer needs a frame stiff enough that the springs are pulling against something solid, and stiff means heavy. Cord machines can be lighter because elastic cords put less sustained strain on the frame — and that is also why they feel different to use, which is covered in how to choose a reformer.
Carriage and rails. A smooth, quiet glide comes from a well-made carriage on proper rails with real wheels, and that assembly is dense. The single most common complaint about the lightest machines is carriage feel, and it is the same root cause as the low weight.
Which is why the useful way to read a weight figure is as a proxy, not a goal. A light reformer is light because something was left out; whether that something matters to you is the actual question.
Moving it, once
Most reformers are moved exactly twice: in, and out. Plan for the first one.
A machine around 56 pounds can be tilted onto one end and walked by one adult. Around 90 to 120 pounds is two people, or one person with a folding frame and a vertical stand. Above about 120 pounds it is two people every time, and awkward rather than merely heavy, because the length is the real problem: the Allegro 2 is published at 94 inches long, which is just under eight feet and does not go round a tight stair turn.
Measure the route before you order. Doorway widths, the diagonal of a stairwell, and the ceiling height over a stair are the three things that stop a delivery. A folding machine is measured folded for storage and unfolded for use, and the space requirements guide has the clearances you actually need around one.
The picks
One machine per weight band

The cheapest real reformer
AeroPilates Reformer 287
The budget route into a reformer-shaped machine. Cords instead of springs, a built-in rebounder, and it folds. The resistance feels different from a studio reformer, and you should know that before you buy.

Real springs in a small room
Merrithew At Home SPX Reformer
A real spring reformer from the STOTT Pilates company in a frame that folds flat. It is the sensible answer for someone who wants studio mechanics and does not have a studio.

Studio-grade at home
Balanced Body Allegro 2 Reformer

Floors, stairs and delivery
- Floor loading is not usually the issue. A 140 pound machine spread over eight feet is less concentrated load than a full bookcase or a bathtub. An upper floor in a normal house is fine.
- Carpet is the issue. A reformer on thick carpet does not sit level and the carriage feel suffers. A hard floor, or a board under the feet, is better.
- Freight, not parcel. Heavier machines ship on a pallet to the curb. Confirm whether the price includes bringing it inside, because "delivered" frequently means the driveway.
- Assembly time scales with weight. The lightest machines arrive largely assembled or take under an hour. A studio-grade machine may ship mostly assembled and still need two people to position.
- A vertical stand changes the calculation. It lets a folding machine live upright in a corner, which matters more than the raw weight for whether it stays in a shared room.
- Downstairs neighbors hear the carriage, not the weight. Heavier machines are usually quieter, because the glide is better.
If the weight figures above have put you off the whole idea, that is a reasonable response and there is a whole category built around it: the reformer alternatives are light enough to carry one-handed, and the folding reformers are the compromise if you want a real machine anyway. The cost side of the same decision is in the cost guide.
How we picked
Chosen on published criteria, and we say so
Most gear sites open by telling you how many hours they spent with the products. We have not used most of these, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Every pick here is chosen against criteria we publish — grip, cushioning, size options, what buyers report after a year of use, and whether the thing is still actually sold — and every manufacturer figure on the page is labeled as the maker's claim.
Nobody pays for a place on this page, no product was supplied free in exchange for coverage, and a specification the maker does not publish is never guessed at. See the full criteria and weighting.

We have not used every product on this page, and we do not pretend otherwise. Thicknesses, materials, sizes and warranty terms are the manufacturer's published figures, shown as their claims. Anything about materials, skin or injury is linked to a source. Prices are set by Amazon and change constantly, so we never type one into the text — every figure comes from Amazon's own data, dated, and disappears rather than going stale. Read the full method.
