The short answer

Buy a buckled cotton strap, and buy 8 ft if you are taller than about 5 ft 9 in. It is the more versatile of the two designs, it works for binding poses as well as stretching, and there is very little to get wrong.

Buy the multi-loop version instead if your reason for wanting a strap is specifically hamstring and hip stretching, and you want to be able to measure progress.

The reason the loops matter is subtler than it first looks. With a continuous strap you naturally pull to wherever feels right today, so you cannot tell whether last month was different. With numbered stations you can, and for anyone working on a specific flexibility goal that feedback is the whole point.

What length to buy

Under 5 ft 6 in6 ftThe bundled default, and it is enough
5 ft 6 in - 6 ft8 ftThe most common upgrade
Over 6 ft8 ft, or 10 ft for binds10 ft is specialist but genuinely useful for binding

Length is the single thing starter kits get wrong, because they all ship the 6 ft version. If you are tall, buying the strap separately is worth the small extra cost — the maths is in kit versus piece by piece.

Best all-round strap

Trideer Yoga Strap

A metal D-ring that does not creep, cotton that is kind to skin, and three lengths to choose from.

As the manufacturer lists it

Material:Cotton webbingBuckle:Metal D-ringLengths:6 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft

What it gets right

  • D-ring holds without creeping mid-stretch
  • Cotton is kinder on bare skin than nylon
  • Cheap enough to buy alongside blocks

What it does not

  • No loops, so you set the length by hand each time
  • Cotton frays at the cut end eventually
  • 6 ft is short if you are tall

Skip it if

you want fixed loops to put a foot through — get a multi-loop strap.

What it does not

  • Nylon is rougher on bare skin than cotton
  • Fixed length, no adjustment between loops

What to look for

  • A metal D-ring buckle, not plastic. Plastic cam buckles creep under tension, which is exactly when you least want them to.
  • Cotton over nylon if it will be against bare skin. Nylon is stronger and rougher; nobody is snapping a cotton yoga strap.
  • Stitched or heat-sealed ends. A raw-cut cotton strap frays within a year.
  • Width around 1.5 inches. Narrower digs in; wider is unwieldy in a bind.

How we picked

Chosen on published criteria, and we say so

Most gear sites open by telling you how many hours they spent with the products. We have not used most of these, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Every pick here is chosen against criteria we publish — grip, cushioning, size options, what buyers report after a year of use, and whether the thing is still actually sold — and every manufacturer figure on the page is labeled as the maker's claim.

Nobody pays for a place on this page, no product was supplied free in exchange for coverage, and a specification the maker does not publish is never guessed at. See the full criteria and weighting.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What length yoga strap do I need?

6 ft up to about 5 ft 6 in tall, 8 ft above that, and 10 ft if you want slack for binding poses.

Are looped yoga straps better?

Better for structured stretching, worse for yoga binds. If you want one strap for everything, buy the buckled version.

Can I use a belt instead of a yoga strap?

For a few weeks, yes. A proper strap is longer, flatter against the skin, and does not slip under tension.
