The Best Yoga Bolsters

A bolster is the one prop that is genuinely optional and genuinely transformative, depending entirely on whether you do restorative practice.

The short answer

If you buy one bolster, buy a firm rectangular one. The flat top makes it usable sitting, lying, under knees and across the back, which the round and narrow shapes are not. Firm matters more than people expect, because a soft bolster compresses to nothing under body weight and then does not support anything.

And be honest about whether you will use it. A bolster earns its cupboard space if you do restorative or yin practice regularly. If you do fast vinyasa three times a week, it will sit in a corner.

Rectangular, round and pranayama

ShapeGood forBad for
RectangularSitting, under knees, supported folds, across the backNothing much; the all-rounder
RoundUnder knees, supported backbends, deep chest openingSitting on; it rolls
Pranayama (long, narrow)Lying along the spine, breathing practiceSitting, and anything needing width

The rectangular shape wins for a first bolster because of one property: it does not roll. A round bolster moves the moment you put uneven weight on it, which is fine when it is under your knees and annoying everywhere else.

The pranayama shape is genuinely different rather than a variant. It is narrow enough to sit under the spine rather than across the body, which opens the chest in a way a wide bolster cannot. If that specific effect is why you want a bolster, buy that one and skip the all-rounder.

Would blankets do?

Partly, and it is worth saying rather than pretending otherwise. Two firmly folded wool blankets replicate a lot of what a rectangular bolster does, cost nothing if you already own them, and store flat. Plenty of studios use exactly that.

What blankets cannot do is hold a consistent shape under weight or give you a curved surface. A supported backbend over folded blankets is a pile you have to rebuild every time; over a bolster it is one object you lie on. If you do restorative practice weekly, that difference is the purchase.

The honest test: do it with blankets for a month. If you find yourself rebuilding the stack every session and resenting it, buy the bolster.

What to look for

  • Firmness above everything. A bolster you sink through is not supporting you. This is the property cheap bolsters get wrong and the one that decides how long it lasts.
  • A removable, washable cover. Bolsters are in contact with skin and hair for long periods. A fixed cover is a mistake you notice in a year.
  • A carry handle. Small thing, and bolsters are more awkward to move than they look.
  • Measure your storage first. A bolster is genuinely bulky, and this is the prop most likely to become a problem in a small flat.

If you are buying for restorative practice generally, a bolster plus two blocks covers nearly all of it — blocks are here. And if you are buying this as a gift, check the recipient has somewhere to put it: our gift guide flags footprint as the most common gifting mistake in this category.

How we picked

Chosen on published criteria, and we say so

Most gear sites open by telling you how many hours they spent with the products. We have not used most of these, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Every pick here is chosen against criteria we publish — grip, cushioning, size options, what buyers report after a year of use, and whether the thing is still actually sold — and every manufacturer figure on the page is labeled as the maker's claim.

Nobody pays for a place on this page, no product was supplied free in exchange for coverage, and a specification the maker does not publish is never guessed at. See the full criteria and weighting.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need a yoga bolster?

Only if you do restorative or yin practice regularly. For active practice it is a luxury, and two folded blankets cover a lot of the same ground.

Rectangular or round bolster?

Rectangular for a first bolster — it does not roll and it works in more positions. Round is a specialist second.

How firm should a yoga bolster be?

Firmer than feels obvious in a shop. A soft bolster compresses under body weight and stops supporting anything.
